| Necessity is the mother of invention. |
America's space exploration program experienced "giant
steps" forward in the 1960's. One of the important steps was
taken by William Creavey who, at that time, was conducting experiments
with Teflon®. He successfully created a seal that could withstand
extreme temperatures and applications associated with the aerospace
industry. The Teflon-encapsulated seal and a new industry were born.
Through the following decades, Creavey Seal Company defined encapsulated
o-ring technology by developing new designs, materials and processes
for applications ranging from outer space to protecting sensitive
mechanical parts, including pumps, filters, compressors, vessel lids
and pressure regulated valves and computer chip manufacturing industry.
Teflon®-encapsulated o-rings with core energizers of precision
stainless steel, FKM or Silicone, are available in many standard
and non-standard dimensions. Our design, manufacturing and quality
control expertise ensure dependable long-term performance.
Leading an entire industry, however, takes more than developing "cutting
edge" technology. Creavey Seal's worldwide reputation is a result
of our unyielding emphasis on quality at every stage of the manufacturing
process including on-time delivery. From precision calibrated tools
to 100% visual inspections, to comprehensive inventory and order entry
procedures, Creavey Seal relentlessly pursues perfection.
Creavey Seal president, Gerald Chrysler, proudly points out that several
customers, based on a "Quality Performance survey," rated
Creavey's overall performance in a range exceeding 98%! As a result,
many customers accept Creavey products directly-into-stock without
further inspection.
Creavey Seal's unmatched quality control systems begin with fully
documented traceability through the entire manufacturing process.
All sizers, pin and anvil micrometers are calibrated with implements
that are carefully maintained and inspected by an independent laboratory,
certified to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Continuous
inspections and visual checks assure customers the industry's most
stringent and comprehensive quality assurance standards.
All engineering and manufacturing refinements are based on quality
aspects. Regardless of the material, order size, specifications or
application, every o-ring made by Creavey Seal Company offers you
and your customers a wealth of quality advantages:
- A unique Teflon welding process for complete and homogeneous
bond.
- Uniform diameters and cross sections
- Optimum sealing capability matched
- Virtually unlimited range of inch and metric sizes
All employees are educated in all aspects of production and strive
to maintain and improve upon the highest quality standards. Employees
are encouraged to suggest ways to improve the manufacturing process
and, in fact, many of our refinements were discovered by the people
most directly involved with the process. Our employees are responsible
for Creavey's renowned record of on-time delivery and strict adherence
to customers' special requirements. |

| The Originator of the Encapsulated O-Ring |
William Creavey opened the doors of progress by giving
the world a reliable way to close off potential leaks between mating
surfaces in static and dynamic applications.
An encapsulated o-ring is a two-component circular seal with a round
cross section. The elastomers impart memory to the seal and are encapsulated
in a Teflon jacket. The encapsulation protects the elastomer from
hostile environments.
Creavey Seal Company engineers and manufactures encapsulated o-rings
in two grades of Teflon and several elastomer materials with a hollow-core
version for specialized needs. The various combinations of these materials
cover a full spectrum of operating conditions in virtually every known
sealing application ... with many new applications on the horizon. |
| |
| Teflon Encapsulation Highest Degrees of Performance |
Compared with solid o-rings, Teflon-encapsulated
o-rings function in a broader range of environments.
FEP Teflon combines superb corrosion resistance, sealing integrity
and an operating temperature range of -450 to +400 °F (-267
to +205 °C). PFA Teflon, a fluorocarbon copolymer similar to
FEP, also provides greatly improved mechanical and creep properties
at higher operating temperatures:-450 to +500 °F (-267 to +260
°C). |
| |
| |
| Creavey Elastomers The Inside Story |
| The homogeneously welded Teflon jacket with an energizer
imparts inherent memory to the o-ring. Each energizer varies in its
ability to return to its original shape when subjected to a compressive
force. Selecting the optimal material and dimensions depends on the
application and the specific requirements of the seal. |
| |
| Silicone |
| Silicone is well suited for applications demanding
lighter compressive forces and more extreme temperatures. Silicone
has a Shore A hardness of 70 and an operating temperature range of
-80 to +500 °F (-62 to +260 °C). |
| |
| Astra Seal |
| Made from precision-rolled stainless steel, the Astra
Seal spring core o-rings are engineered to provide extremely high
compression set resistance, even with long-term exposure to cryogenic
temperatures. The Astra Seal operating temperature range is -420 to
+500 °F (-250 to +260 °C). There is simply no better seal
for cryogenic applications. |
| |
| Hollow Core O-Ring |
| Hollow core o-rings provide effective sealing properties
in applications where lower compressive forces may limit sealing ability
of our standard encapsulated o-rings. The combination of a hollow
core insert with a slightly lower hardness offers a more flexible,
easier to squeeze o-ring requiring less energy to activate its sealing
capability. |
| |
| |
| Broad Range of Applications |
| Now there is a Choice! Although solid elastomer o-rings
are suitable for a broad range of applications, there are limitations.
Consider Teflon ® encapsulated o-rings as the choice which permits
your equipment to perform in a broader range of hostile environments
and temperatures while retaining their sealing capabilities. |
